Everything you need to know about Siberian Huskies

Grooming my Husky

  • Siberian huskies have a double coat. They have a thick outercoat know as guard hairs, and a soft undercoat. This double coat regulates their body temperature. The coat keeps them warm and also keeps them cool. This is why you never shave a husky.
  • Twice a year, a new guard coat comes in, which pushes the undercoat out. This is called blowing their coat. This results in a ton of shedding. It is very important to stay ahead of this, otherwise you will be sweeping, or vacuuming constantly. Buy a fermenator! This pulls out the shedding undercoat very effectively.
  • Grooming your husky regularly has many benefits. It allows for great bonding time between you and your husky, makes vet visits easier, and gives you an opportunity to check for lumps, fleas, ear problems, etc.
  • You only need to bathe your husky a few times a year. They are naturally clean dogs. When you do, make sure that you brush your dogs coat first to remove excess hair.
  • It is important to clip your dogs nails regularly. Make sure you handle your huskies feet regularly to make this process go smoother.
